FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 25, 2018
ARLINGTON, Va. –- On Wednesday, June 27, 2018 the TAPS Institute for Hope and Healing will host a live online webinar and introductory discussion on “Understanding Why People Die by Suicide,” featuring Dr. Carla Stumpf-Patton, Director of TAPS Suicide Postvention Programs.
When someone we love dies by suicide it can be overwhelming, confusing and bring forth many emotions and questions. We become detectives trying to understand why and how this could have happened. While we may never fully understand the exact thoughts in the mind of our loved ones at the time they died, researchers and specialists have come to learn a great deal about the suicidal mind. Understanding more about this can often help survivors in the grieving process as they struggle with the self-directed questions of blame, guilt, doubt, and regret.
The recent deaths of celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain focused national attention on suicide. A recent report released by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) cited suicide as a leading cause of death in the U.S. with death by suicide numbers up 25 percent across the country. Suicide rates increased in nearly every state from 1999 through 2016. On average in 2018, according to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, there are 123 people who die by suicide every day in the United States. Last year, according to the Department of Defense there were 285 suicide deaths among active military service members. Among military reserves there were 219 suicides as well as 126 in the National Guard. Additionally, the Veterans Administration has noted that suicide risk among veterans is 22 percent higher compared to U.S civilian adults.
The TAPS Institute for Hope and Healing session will address some of the prominent theories about why people die by suicide. It will also explore some of the contributing and risk factors that can come together to form the “perfect storm” that leads to suicide and how survivors of loss can continue to heal with this knowledge.
