TAPS Receives 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator
By Awarding its Highest Score, Organization Recognizes Outstanding Fiscal Responsibility, Transparency, Accountability
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 12, 2017
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) has once again received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent charity evaluator. Announced July 1, TAPS earned the top distinction recognizing its employment of fiscal management best practices and its commitment to transparency and accountability.
"TAPS is pleased to once again be among the select group of organizations that receive Charity Navigator's four-star rating," said Bonnie Carroll, TAPS President and Founder and 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient. "We rely on the generosity and support of the American people to perform our mission, and they should feel confident that each dollar is being used efficiently and responsibly. The TAPS team works hard to ensure we maximize the amount of every donation that goes to our critical programs that provide hope and healing to the families of our fallen military heroes.”
Since 2002, using objective, data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a four-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These "Accountability and Transparency" metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity's overall rating, reveal which charities have "best practices" that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely share basic information about their organization with their donors and stakeholders. According to Charity Navigator, only one out of four organizations evaluated earns four stars.
