ABC News Correspondent Kyra Phillips to Join TAPS Board of Directors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 23, 2020
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) announced ABC News Correspondent Kyra Phillips will be joining the TAPS Board of Directors, effective immediately.
Bonnie Carroll, TAPS President and Founder, stated, “As the organization caring for the families of our fallen military heroes, TAPS is honored and excited to welcome Kyra Phillips, who has reported on military service and sacrifice for decades, to our Board of Directors.”
An award-winning television correspondent, Kyra Phillips began her association with TAPS in 2003 while covering the Iraq War for CNN and sharing the stories of the families forever impacted by military casualties. Her work has taken her all over the world, covering breaking news across the Middle East. Phillips became the first female journalist to fly in an F-14 air-to-air combat training mission over the Persian Gulf and her war coverage secured her the Atlanta Press Club's National Reporter of the Year in 2007.
But it was her compassion for military families and her ability to tell their stories to the American people that endeared her to military survivors across the country. Phillips had previously served as a member of the TAPS Honorary Board.
Kyra has served as the Master of Ceremonies for TAPS Annual Honor Guard Gala, National Military Survivor Seminar, National Military Suicide Survivor Seminar, and many regional events including the Colorado Celebrity Classic. Her personal association with TAPS began when a dear friend who flew for the Navy died by suicide and his family found comfort through TAPS. As the mother of twins, Kyra is especially skilled at speaking with surviving military children and encouraging them to share their heroes and talk about their own grief.
