Surviving Military Families Suffering Suicide Loss Find Voice with TAPS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 27, 2016

St. Pete Beach, Fla. - Surviving parents, spouses, children, siblings, and others grieving the death of a service member by suicide will gather for the eighth TAPS National Military Suicide Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp from Friday, Sept. 30, through Sunday, Oct. 2. The seminar will focus on helping surviving families as they tell their stories of loss and finding hope.

The annual event, which offers a TAPS Good Grief Camp for children, workshops for adults and healing connections with others grieving the loss of a loved one in the military by suicide, rounds out National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Nearly 1,000 adult and child surviving family members, military mentors and professionals in the field of suiciology will be part of the annual seminar this weekend.

At the TAPS Good Grief Camp, children grieving the death of a parent or sibling will learn coping strategies and meet others who have experienced a similar loss. During the camp, they are paired one-on-one with military mentors, active duty service members, Reserve or recently separated veterans.

As part of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, use #HopeHelpHeal and help share the stories of those left behind after a suicide in the military and how hope, help and healing are available. TAPS has a Facebook frame. Throughout National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, visit facebook.org/tapsorg and find out how to get the frame for your own profile photo. Go to www.taps.org/HopeHelpHeal to read survivor stories, see coverage of families of America's fallen and find additional resources.

TAPS is working with the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Action Alliance, the Defense Suicide Prevention Office, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and Joining Forces to help our service members, veterans and surviving military families fight this other side of war.
