Video: Interpersonal Support for Children of Military Loss — The Role of the Military Mentor

Presenter: Karl Hillway

Connection building in the face of trauma and loss is an essential tool in supporting children grieving a military loss. Active Duty and Veteran Service Members can offer guidance and mentorship to children of military loss. Mentoring holds lifelong meaning for children who have suffered loss and the mentors who may be experiencing loss and grief alongside their mentee. Relationships serve as a beneficial remedy to loss and trauma. Attachments with mentors who are present and attentive allow for children to establish a sense of interpersonal safety and belonging. This supportive relationship increases the likelihood of recovery from difficult situations through reciprocity, reducing social isolation, building healthy boundaries, being encouraged, and learning conflict resolution. Join us in exploring how Military Mentors serve as a remedy against challenging circumstances through connection with children of military loss.
